If you have not yet heard, the iPhone 5 has been jail-broken. Before beginning the jailbreak process please read the following disclaimer:

Jail-breaking your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad , in rare cases can cause problems on your devices or open security holes, Apple will not help you fix issues caused by jail-breaking your device.You will be jail-breaking your device at YOUR OWN RISK and may have to fix any problems that arise on your own. We are not responsible to any damages caused by jail-breaking your device.

In 2010 the U.S. Library of Congress,  issued a ruling stating that U.S. iPhone owners now have legal standing to jailbreak and unlock their devices. Other devices and other methods of hacking may not be legal.

This jailbreak is Compatible with all iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and iPad mini models running iOS 6.0 through 6.1.2. You must have a computer running either a Windows XP or newer ,  OSX 10.6 or newer or a Linux x86 / x86_64 machine. In addition you will need an iPhone, iPad or iPod running iOS 6.0 to 6.1.2, and your USB to iPhone cable. If you are not sure what version your IOS device is you can check it by going to the settings

Step 1:

Visit evasi0n.com and choose your operating system. I chose to download from the box.com mirror. Total download time was about 60 seconds. Currently the iPhone 5 jailbreak is available for Windows, OSX and Linux.  For this DIY walk-through I will be using windows. Download the .zip file and save it in a location you will remember, we will come back to it. If you do not have a un-zip program here is a great free one:

Step 2:

Back up your iPhone. If you do not already have iTunes installed download the latest version (at the time of writing this article version 11.02) you can download it here: apple.com/itunes

When you open iTunes you will be prompted to update to the newest version, do so.

Once the iTunes update is complete, plug in your iPhone via USB and update it to iOS 6.1.2.

accept the terms of the update.

and accept the user agreement.

it will take 10-15min for the update to complete.

and now that your update is complete it is time to install the jailbreak.

Step 3: Turn off the lock on your iPhone.

Step 4: Select “Set Passcode OFF”

Step 5: Enter your password in order to turn off the password.

Step 4: Backup your iPhone

Step 1: Select the iPhone button in the top right.

Step 2: Select the “This computer” button, and then push the “backup now” button

Step 5: Install envasiOns jailbreak.

Head to your internet download directory and double click on the .zip jailbreak file you downloaded earlier.

once the file opens in your zip utility, go ahead and double click on the .exe file to install the jailbreak.

while the jailbreak installs do not use your iPhone or computer.

When the installer prompts you click the jailbreak icon on your iPhone. It may not appear to respond, DO NOT click the button again, be patient.

on your iPhone select the  Jailbreak button:

On your iPhone select the Jailbreak app.

Once you select the jailbreak app be patient as the jailbreak installs, it may take up to 5 min.

Once the jailbreak has unpacked and installed you should have a app called Cydia available to you.

Select the Cydia app to choose jailbreak features.

Select user if you are not sure.

If you want to see some of the popular apps, select featured.

 

Select the tools to start with tab.

If you are not sure where to start, try the Activator app.

 

And there you have it, your iPhone is now jailbroken! Be sure to avoid apple iOS updates as they will most likely cause your phone to  require a restore, loosing your jailbreak.
